because we are perceived to be arrogant, fat, rich, and just do whatever we want.  lots of these are stereotypes and obviously aren't true, but the image comes from our media displayed across the globe and our global actions (aka wars etc).  for whatever reason, what a small elite group does reflects our whole country and thus we get the image of being ass holes

because many americans are ignorant jackasses and our government is power hungry and doesn't quite do what is best for the country as a whole most of the time.

just my opinion. We also get involved in other countries business when we shouldn't always, idk the list goes on. To each his own.

well, i'm telling u (from an european perspective) that the majority of people thinks the Irag war is ONLY fought for the oil and that pisses people off since we in europe had some devastating wars on our soil this past century and so the general mood and attitude are naturally really anti-war.

so, now an U.S. president (we all know who i'm talking about), who is not really seen as an idol or intelligent, wise man that would be needed for such an office, takes his country to war on foreign soil and marches in there with a huge and technologically amazing army, and fights down Irag (and neighbors)....

now look again at our perspective. of course, a lot of people here are ignorant as well and only want to blame "The Americans" instead of the people in charge but that's just how stereotypes and general people attitudes develop... life is not fair...

^hope this all made sense and if some other european (I'm german) has sth to say, PLEASE post that! i'd love to read their point of view

when i was in the US this year, i heard some people saying shit like "oh, shut up u german. we could kick ur ass any time" or "u can't tell us anything. u're the only one here whose country hasn't won a world war"...
it might be funny to some people, but i think it's just immature and shows how u don't give a shit about ur own country by proudly delivering stereotypes to everybody who's listening to u.

wow man i'm sorry those arrogant ass holes actually said something like that to you, thats not how all of us think, and frankly they dont know what they are talking about, considering they probably weren't even around then.  thats why americans get such bad reps, its cause of people like that that would say some dumb shit like that.  its not like any of us was around for that, so how can we lay claim to any of it?

yeah I dont think minute stereotypes are reason enough to want to kill us. does any one have any specific examples or historical insights on the matter. oh and does anyone know how many innocent civilians have died in the current wars. I just see images of people burning american flags and saying death to america and i was just wondering what arguments those kinds of people had.

There are an ass load of reasons:

Jealousy
- Wealth- The US is extremely rich. We make up more than 25% of the entire world's GDP. In other words, we have more than a quarter of all the wealth in the world.
- Innovation- The US is a leader in this field. Think of all the stuff we invented in the 21st century:
-The assembly line
-flight
-neumatic tires
-machine gun
-automatic weapons
-semi-automatic pistol
-tanks
-submarines
-metal water vessels
-put a man on the moon
-radar
-lasers
-the microchip
-the cell phone
-the internet
-google
-youtube
-facebook
-twitter
-Military Power- Our military is incredibly overwhelming. Our military expenidture is more than the rest of the world combined. Everything from our training, to weapons, to clothing, to vests, to gear, to tanks, to vehicles cannot be matched. Other countries rely on us such as the UK, Canada, China to export weapons, tactics, etc. Also our military is the only "global" one. We have 12 super carriers, the rest of the world combined has none.

We don't help enough- Many countries especially those in the UN or NATO believe we dont do everything in our power to help promote peace. We have this seemingly endless military power and wealth (as percieved by other countries) and yet we dont do anything. There have been around 750-800 UN resolutions passed. On just about all of them, all the countries turn to the USA to either fund or execute the mission, or the US vetos it and we are percieved as arrogant or selfish

We help too much- Those same countries that blame us for not helping enough also enjoy accusing us of helping too much and meddling in other countries affairs even when that country has no relationship to the affairs we are "meddling in". Case in point: France about us and Israel and Palestine, or France and us and Iraq.

We create unfair trade- This one is not as popular as the countries that "hate" us also participate in this scheme. But some like to blame Global South poverty on us

We support Israel- Muslims hate Jews.

I haven't read one response in this thread so it might have been said already but The United States is looked down upon because we squander opportunity and we greedily replace it with instant gratification. We elect corrupt crooks to represent us then we bitch and moan when we lose our jobs. A large percentage of our population is obese, and  it's not that being fat is inherently bad it's when you combine the fact that we have so little to show for our gluttony. Sure America is the most advanced country in the world but with 300+ million citizens, near unlimited resources to be educated and expand our intellect and total freedom we are damn pathetic. We should be obscenely further ahead in our evolution and progression as a species then we are now.

I can go on and on but I won't because this is newschoolers , and having frequented this forum since early 2003 I can say with some confidence that any attempt to engage in any reasonable discussion will dissolve into stupidity and one word posts.

typical americans, claiming random shit, those things may very well be true but a lot of important inventions have got roots in other countries...
+just note how many of the things you've summed up have military origin...

nonetheless i'd still like to live in the US...

Another point here, alot of that stuff you claim to of invented was taken from other countries, you just improved and made the stuff work.

Take flight for example, before the wright brothers took to the skies John Stringfellow, from chard in england (Pretty much where my family comes from, well that area) had a small airborn flight on a steam powered airplane. Now, im pretty sure thats taking to the skies, maybe only by afew feat but he was flying, way before the wright bros did.

Name one thing any other country other than America has invented in the last 100 years that is ground breaking...

The last thing europe invented of value was the printing press.

Look at the computer you are using to log onto newschoolers.

An American invented the silicon micro chip that runs your computer.
An American invented the light bulb that allows you to see
An American invented the Alternating Current that gives your home power
An American invented the alkaline battery that lets you store energy
An American invented the Magnetic Hard disk in your computer
An American invented the material of Plastic
An American invented RAM
An American invented the Internet
An American invented the instant messaging program youre using now, the browser you are using now, and the facebook website you will be using shortly.

Little to show for it? The entire modern world was created by us and is still being created by us

Are you serious?

His plane did not use an aerlion to acheive lift. It did not have any form of control. It was not manned. It "flew" for about 100 feet 20 feet off the ground.

I would hardly call that flight. I would call that a kite with a big heavy metal steam engine on it.

but we also independently developed our own with no knowledge of the soviet version. Same with satellites and space flight.

Theres a difference between that, and us inventing stuff the rest of the world didnt even know could be invented and us sharing it with them.

I will give you this:

English invented the first "computer"
Soviets invented the first jet engine
Nazis invented the first long range rocket/missile

We invented, in this time period:
The Nuclear reactor
Plastics
Tempered Glass


Let us not forget some really fundamental ones like the light bulb, electricity, and the battery.

they hate us because we don't give a crap about the sovereignty of other nations (ie Iraq, Afghanistan) and we ignore the pleas of the UN. we have troops in over 100 countries around the world but how many countries have troops in the US? not many. we are also ignorant of many ppls cultures which is obviously annoying.

Do you not think, electricity, light bulbs, cell phones, the internet, facebook, and products made of plastic have advanced society?

I mean perhaps not the entire worlds society, but a very large portion of it. The internet brings us all closer together and allows us to share ideas relatively uncensored to a vast audience.

Cell phones allow us to communicate readily.

Can your ignornace seriosuly ignore the effect America has had on mankind as a whole? Go take a history course and learn what life was like between 37,000BC and July 3rd, 1776AD

you bring up a very valid point, that i left out, although Iraq and Afghanistan are terrible examples as they are declared combative enemies of the United States and we are fighting a war against them. But other than that, you bring up a great point.

By the way, technically there are no standing armies in America.

We do not have troops in over 100 countries. There are only 189-192 countries in the world. We have troops in about 20 countries.

We are ignorant of other peoples cultures, but others are even more ignorant. We just travel more than other nationalities do, so our ignorance is most exposed.

Though based on a global survey the French rank last in tourist pleasantness.

Things like Twitter have a negative impact on society. Things like Twitter make people stupid. Also nowhere in my original post did I deny any impact "America has had on mankind as a whole" I have no idea where that statement came from. I said America was the most advanced nation in the world, what I questioned was not it's contribution to the world , what I questioned was it's squandered potential. Before you tell me to take a history course I suggest you learn reading comprehension.

The computer that im looking at to log onto newschoolers was first invented by a man named Konrad Zuse in 1941 in GermTny. now if im not mistaken that is a diffrent country than america and is ground breaking and also is in the last 100 years.

Actually James Edward and Mathew Evans (Canadians) invented the lightbulb, but their patents and ideas were bought by Thomas Edison.

Of course you will try to disprove me or tell me how this is bullshit, and this ignorance is why a lot of the world views Americans in a negative light. Both in your reaction to this statement, and the fact that in the first place you are so hell bent on Americas greatness.

I dont have anything wrong with Americans, but unfortunately a lot of them do give you guys an image of ignorance, especially a lot of your recent politicians.

Most Americans I have met are so fucking self absorbed. All they think about is America. When I was at Momentum not one single American could tell me who Canada's prime minister was. It is pathetic how little most of you know about your neighboring country. Also, the US owes Canada, or more specifically BC BILLIONS of dollars in lumber taxes that you are never going to pay.
